Activist Arrested for Leafletting DNC Event

Ben Masel, a prominent figure in the marijuana legalization movement, was
arrested in Chicago Saturday afternoon following a "Stop the Drug War"
march sponsored by the group Cures Not Wars. Masel was handing out flyers
advocating decriminalization of marijuana near Buckingham Fountain in the
city's Grant Park, where a Democratic Party event hosted by Mayor Richard
M. Daley and featuring Vice Presidential couple Al and Tipper Gore was
taking place. At press time, Masel was still being held, and had not yet
been charged. Police confirmed that he will likely face state charges. 

Update: 8/25/96 afternoon.  Ben Masel was released from custody Sunday
afternoon.
