We know that Paul Robeson came to Portland. We hope to find people who remember his time in Maine to help share with us their stories and commemorate his devotion to humanity. We will have recorded music of his remarkable voice and film clips from his stage career and his political activities on behalf of workers everywhere.
The planning committee includes Janet Johnson, treasurer of the Portland Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Cecil Collin Fontaine, who works for the Maine American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), and Wells Staley-Mays, Director of Peace Action Maine.
