Paul Robeson - All American
Theatrical production, and
The Second Annual Capitol Center Racism and Intolerance Symposium
9:00am, Capitol Center for the Arts, 44 South Main Street, Concord, NH 03301
The Capitol Center celebrates the centennial of Paul Robeson's
birth with a dramatic new biography of this authentic African American
hero. The legendary Robeson, who excelled as athlete, scholar, actor
and singer, dedicated his life to fighting oppression and racial
intolerance. Esteemed worldwide -- but repudiated by his own
country for his zealous pursuit of an unpopular ideology --
Robeson's legacy is of an idealist uncompromising in his
championing of the downtrodden. Immediately following the
performance, the Capitol Center will reprise its highly regarded
symposium for high school students on issues of racism and
intolerance, featuring a panel of distinguished and articulate
activists. Don't miss this important event. The Paul Robeson
Collection, including biography and source notes, can be found at
www.upapubs.com/guides/robeson.htm.
Topics: Racism, intolerance, U.S. history
Recommended for Grades 9 -12
Program length, including symposium: 2:30

"The (April 8, 1998) symposium provided a 'teachable moment' for our
students, the effects of which extended far beyond the classroom. Our
students were able to see history 'come alive' -- to see history not
as a series of unrelated and sterile events, but as a process that
cannot be divorced from the individual lives and experiences that
shape it." -- Mary Ann Popec Gormley,
Director of Social Studies, Alvirne High School, Hudson, NH
